Overwatch 2 is making a significant comeback in 2025 with a major update that includes the return of loot boxes and an exciting new game mode. As the game faces growing competition from other online shooters, Blizzard Entertainment is introducing several changes to revitalize the player experience.
The reintroduction of loot boxes marks a notable shift in the game’s monetization strategy. While this move may be seen as controversial given the historical backlash against loot box systems, Blizzard has implemented several player-friendly features to address previous concerns. The new system promises complete transparency with published drop rates and guarantees:
– Every box contains at least a Rare or better item
– Epic items are guaranteed after opening five boxes
– Legendary items are guaranteed after opening twenty boxes
Players can earn these loot boxes through various methods, including weekly challenges, event participation, and the seasonal battle pass.

A major addition to the game is “Stadium,” a new mode that draws inspiration from tactical shooters like Counter-Strike: Go and Valorant. This best-of-seven format pits two teams of five against each other in a unique gameplay experience. Players can earn currency during rounds to upgrade hero abilities and even switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. The mode will launch with 14 heroes and expand with future updates.
The game is also introducing new characters and systems to enhance player experience. Season 16 will feature Freja, a new hero equipped with a versatile crossbow and high mobility. Players can look forward to testing Freja during a trial period in the previous season. Additionally, a new hero named Aqua, featuring water-based abilities, is scheduled for release in later seasons.
A new Perks system is being implemented, allowing each hero to access two unique upgrades per match. This addition aims to provide more strategic depth and variety in playstyles. Combined with the return of 6v6 competitive queues, these changes represent Blizzard’s commitment to keeping Overwatch 2 fresh and competitive in the dynamic landscape of online shooters.
